Dear Mark Sanchez,

I want to start out by thanking you for two out of the last three years! Your first two years made me proud to be a Jets fan! In your rookie year, you brought us to the AFC Championship game. Rocky road or not, I don’t think there’s one fan that would discount that! The second year, maybe we expected more from you, but nevertheless, you pulled us through the playoffs and back to the AFC Championship game yet again! Now, I recognize that it was most certainly a team effort – Offense and Defense – but, man! What a leader we saw.

And then 2011 happened. Or did it? I find my sentiments more in the “What-the-hell-happened” Zone. First we have the threat of a cancelled season at the hands of the lockout. But then the lockout ended and “HERE COME THE JETS” rang throughout New York and New Jersey. But despite the 2-0 start, it just never seemed to come together… With the season ending on a childish, take-my-toys-and-go-home squabble (on the field!!!!), Jets fans had enough. What happened, Mark? Too much time on Broadway? Too much twitter? Too many distractions? (Thanks for GQ, by the way!)

So where does that leave us? Some of the most loyal fans in the world – and the best fans at that – are questioning you and your work ethic – something I never thought would be necessary… But really, can you blame us? Whether you know that you gave your all, or not, we need more. You knew when you came to NY that you were entering the lion’s den! Go big or go home…Shit or get off the pot…eat or be eaten…If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere…but if not…then look out!

Because someone else is waiting to take your spot. And of all people, it’s the closest thing to the risen Christ that we’ve seen in about 2000 years – or so I’m told. People love Tim, the man. Tim, the football player, on the other hand…ehhhhhhhhhhhhh…

Do me a favor – don’t forget that. You’re lucky that the coaches and the powers that be have named you ‘the starter’.  Show them – and the rest of us – why you deserve to play in the number 1 spot. But stay confident. When you play scared, you get hurt – and look how that worked out for Drew Bledsoe. MY advice: play your game. Remember that Brian Schottenheimer was a tool and sucked at his job. Learn to trust and love Tony Sparano now that he’s back in the role he should be. Use your weapons, hit them in the numbers/hands and pray that this year they can actually bring a couple of passes in. And somewhere in the mix, embrace Tim and the wildcat role he will play on the 2012 NY Jets football team. Become friends. Stay the hell out of Manhattan and OFF of the Jersey Shore.

But, for God’s sake (pun emphatically NOT intended), have some fun! I truly think that was the difference last year. You were never happy – never looked like you were having fun. And it rubbed off on your teammates, your coaches and the fans.

Cut the locker room bullshit and play NFL football.

We’re rooting for you – but we’re hedging our bets. Up the ante. Beat the odds. And kick some ass.

Love,

The New York Jets Fan Club of Tampa Bay
